WHO'S THERE?

Born and raised in Romney, West Virginia, multi instrumentalist, Ben Townsend has studied Appalachian traditional music extensively.  Townsend has studied a variety of old-time traditions ranging from the archaic, haunting fiddle of his home to the Round Peak music of North Carolina and Virginia to the Bluegrass of East Kentucky and Ohio.   

As a member of The Fox Hunt, Old Sledge, The Iron Leg Boys, The Hackensaw Boys, The Hillbilly Gypsies and now with his brother under the name Tabernacle, Ben Townsend has traveled across the country and around the world spreading his unique take on West Virginia regional old-time music. He is also a devoted teacher of the music of his region and works both privately and as a featured teacher at music festivals and camps.

 

Townsend’s most recent project, 2 Guys Named Ben is a video series  based on footage collected by Townsend and long time friend Ben Guzman on a cycle tour from Romney, West Virginia to Los Angeles, California,   The series features interviews with traditional musicians and folk artists throughout Appalachia, across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and is complimented by a Grammy nominated Album, Deep End Sessions, Vol 3: Ben Townsend and Friends.

Sarah Brown is a letterpress printer and wood engraver. She’s been making some form of art since she could hold a tool, but she learned basic printing techniques while working on her degree at West Virginia University. A few years later, she saved a couple tons of letterpress printing equipment from the scrapyard of Phillipi, West Virginia, then dove head first into the vast world of letterpress printing.  

She's completed two internships, several classes and intensives, but mostly, she's honed her craft spending hours and hours working with her equipment. 

Regan Detwiler is a letterpress printer and educator based in Columbus, Ohio. She has a background in literature and creative writing, where she first found her love for words on paper. Regan has been printing since 2017, when she was Studio Assistant at the University of Michigan Book Arts Studio. Since then, she has been working in the shops of experienced printers in both Michigan and Ohio, and has started her own small printing operation, Big Hug Letterpress.
